Spiritual Direction

Let your life speak.”

Parker J Palmer

In a Spiritual Director, you‘ll find a soul friend and companion who will walk beside you on your journey, and help you unpack your spiritual experiences, discern important choices, explore long-held beliefs, and nudge you gently toward growth. They’ll help you explore your relationship with the Divine on an ongoing basis, to make sense of your life’s twists and turns and gain a clearer perspective on where God has been, and is still, at work in the midst of it all. A Spiritual Director is a sounding board, a skilled listener and a resource.

People come to spiritual direction for different reasons and lengths of time “for a reason, a season or a lifetime.” Since the practice is centred on the seeker, how they use spiritual direction is up to them.

What do people talk about in spiritual direction? All kinds of “life” things - decisions, work, relationships, but central to the session is you and God.

Spiritual direction is a professional, confidential relationship and doesn’t involve telling anyone what to do (despite sounding like it would). It provides a safe space where your soul is cherished. You can talk about your mystical experiences without anyone thinking you’re crazy! In spiritual direction, you’ll learn that such experiences are normal and begin to explore what they mean, and the kind of life they’re inviting you to.

The first session of 30 minutes is complimentary to connect, get introduced and explore your expectations, understanding and any previous experience of spiritual direction.

Spiritual direction sessions are one hour, usually monthly and are $85. Sessions are available in person or on Zoom/Skype. A no-show fee will be applied unless notice is given 24 hours prior, except in the case of emergency. There are pay in advance and concession card options as well.

My promise to you

We are here to explore your path together. Our understanding of the Divine may differ, but that’s to be expected. The Divine loves diversity and your spiritual journey is unique, just like you!

I promise to approach our sessions together with deep reverence and humility – praying and asking that we feel God’s presence while together. I warmly welcome you into a sacred space for reflection, rest and renewal.

I promise to pay close attention to whatever you want to share and I will observe where, in you, I notice the Spirit may be living, moving and drawing you closer.

I promise our sessions together will centre on you and how you discover your own inner wisdom. I will not give advice, nor will I try to fix or change anything about you.

I promise to lay aside judgments, opinions, biases and assumptions. You are the best judge of your life and your relationship with the Divine. I honour that and recognise this is a work of mystery and grace.

I promise to hold your story in strictest confidence and act according to the Code of Ethics for Spiritual Directors

I promise to pray for you between sessions.

Thank you for the privilege of journeying with you as your Spiritual Director.

What People Are Saying

“With limited understanding about what Spiritual Direction was, I found Jenny's name on a list of recommended directors. To be honest I felt a bit strange asking for spiritual direction, I thought that as the leader of a large church surely I should have this figured out by now! So, a little nervous about what I was signing up for, I sent my first email to Jenny introducing myself and explaining my situation. She immediately made me feel at ease. Still a little unsure about what it was all about, I turned up to my first appointment. I felt clueless and tentative. But the moment Jenny opened the door I felt a warm and comforting welcome. She made me feel immediately at peace. The time raced by and by the time I left, I felt lighter, I felt heard, I felt a sort of contentment. I realised as I drove home that, as a Pastor, it had been a long time since someone just let me talk - about me. It had been a long time since I could sit and have someone listen, really listen and help me unpack my thoughts and feelings about life, about God, and about my life and God. I spend so much of my time trying to encourage others on their journey I hadn't realised how much I needed someone to do that for me. Jenny allows me space to question, think, sit, contemplate, rethink - like a sounding board for the things God is saying to me. I walk away from every session with something to consider, something to pray about and something to continue unpacking with God. I always feel like she has been able to steer me a little in a productive direction, one that I have found always leads me to new places of discovery in God.”

“I have been working with Jenny as my Spiritual Director on a monthly basis for three years. This has been a time of significant discernment and transition for me. Jenny has been invaluable in providing insights, tools and resources to help me listen to God’s leading and to navigate the changes this has involved in my own life. I would highly recommend her as a Spiritual Director.

“I have been working with Jenny Caston close to a year now. Jenny has been very good at creating an intentional space that has allowed me to explore the inner wisdom that is already within me. Jenny is a very present and centred spiritual director, and this has enabled me to explore whatever is on my heart. Jenny uses variety of tools that has helped me become acquainted with the complexities that make me who I am. In sum, my work with Jenny has helped me become more compassionate and love all parts of who I am.”

“I am always encouraged and refreshed after our time together. Over the past two years I have known real spiritual healing and understanding of who I am.  Study of The Enneagram and my personality (type 9) has been a key to my growth.  Jenny gently guides me, and is always generous in sharing her knowledge and resources to assist my spiritual journey.”

“Jenny has been my Spiritual Director since 2018. She is a thoughtful, caring, prayerful person who cares about you as a person, as well as the work/ministry/life you are engaged in. Jenny is easy to talk to and listen to. And she listens very carefully. So carefully that she sometimes picks up things I did not know I had said. Jenny asks insightful questions, helps me to reflect and offers wise insights. She also makes sure things are not avoided or overlooked, and has a way of challenging me that is both direct and encouraging.

I have found our sessions extremely helpful and valuable. I really appreciate the different perspectives Jenny brings, helping me to see things in a new and growthful light. One thing I have found particularly helpful is the image of my “toolbag” for life and ministry. With Jenny's help I have looked at which tools are useful, which may need to be taken out, what tools need to be added.”
